Portuguese language launched

Starting in semester two, ANU students will have even more language options to choose from. The School of Language Studies will start offering a Portuguese language course which will be delivered online through Indiana University and coordinated locally.
The course aims to expand options in language studies for students of the Bachelor of Latin American Studies, students of the Pan-Asian Studies Institute, the Bachelor of Languages, Bachelor of European Studies, Bachelor of Development Studies, Bachelor of International Relations, Bachelor of Policy Studies and the Diploma of Languages. It is also open to the wider community as a non-award course.
This course has received strong support from the Brazilian Embassy through government funding for a Brazilian tutor to support our students in their language learning process and experience. Being able to interact in Portuguese in addition to online classes will greatly enhance this unique opportunity to learn and immerse yourself in one of the major languages of the world.
The course is a practical introduction to the Portuguese language, with an emphasis on Portuguese as spoken in Brazil. Students will develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, reaching an advanced beginners level by the end of the second semester, based on a communicative and culture-based approach in a simulated immersion situation. Throughout the year, students will develop a knowledge and understanding of Brazilian culture as well as that of other Portuguese-speaking countries around the world.
PORT1001 will be taught in second semester of 2013. PORT1002 will be taught in first semester of 2014.There are no prerequisites for PORT1001. The equivalent knowledge of PORT1001 is required for PORT1002.
